Wal-Mart in Lakewood
I felt a little guilty while reading a story on the legal challenges to Wal-Mart building a store in Lakewood. I wasn’t very interested in the ingenuity of the citizen’s committee which had launched county, state, and federal level challenges simultaneously (and has since last the state leg, but is following up the other two). I would even have let the plan’s requirement for the Wal-Mart to be designed with a “Pacific Northwest feel” go but with just a raised eye brow. But this one-liner was too much for me:
In November 2003 the City Council rezoned the 25-acre site, allowing Wal-Mart into the suburb of 60,000 people.
I don’t read much about City Council’s going out of their way to welcome Wal-Mart. I wonder if they all survived election challenges on this issue?
